I Scream Social -1st Time

In July I went to I Scream Social for the first time and the community was tangibly incredible. Maybe it’s my BFA and too many art critiques that’s left me jaded, scared or skeptical of such warm fuzzies but I’m coming around. It’s really nice to be around so many creatives who are so supportive. No convincing need, no qualifiers-just pure, joyful support and encouragement because you’re doing something creative that fulfills some part of you. Even though a little part of me questions if people really are THAT happy for you or aren’t secretly juding their authenticity is enough to override that nay-saying voice. While this may sound like a cynic, I promise I’m not though I am absolutely a Miranda (yes, I recently found Sex and The City & there’s no doubt who I am).

Anyways, it was wonderful listen to the lineup of writers read their work. First were pre-scheduled/planned writers followed by open mic. We had the pleasure of listening to Ari Kelly, Austen Schreib, Marietta Speaks, Julie Poole, Angela Gomez, Autumn Tompson, Sefia & Valerie. Most were poems but there was one spoken word and one short story. The format was easy and welcoming as everyone gathered, mingled, perused the books of Alienated Majesty (where it took place), got their ice cream ( including a vegan option) and then sat to listen. Each individual had five minutes which felt like a good amount of time to get a feel for the artist and still have a diverse grouping of variety.

If you’re wondering— did you do open mic? No, not this time. I do plan to in the future but nothing is exactly ready yet. My plan is to read an excerpt of a chapter that can stand on its own but also create intrigue. Yes, I have the chapter in mind but I’m fiddling with the except to fit within the time limit. Every time I’ve practiced reading I come in a little over 5 minutes so before I speak I’ll need to shave something a little.

Would I recommend going? Absolutely! Its a great, welcoming community in a cool space with good treats. Definitely planning to come back both as a listener and speaker.
